Here's a nice story: At one point in his so-so career, long after Elementals had come and gone, and before Fables set the comics world on fire (or at least a vigorous smoulder), one of the editors at DC Vertigo asked Bill to come up with a pitch for a Corinthian series (spinning off from the popular Sandman series, which DC was determined to exploit in every possible way). Bill did up a pitch, which included these three pages of art samples, having pitched it as a story he would both write and draw. The pitch was rejected. An editor or two claimed Neil didn't like it. Bill claimed he didn't believe Neil ever saw it. One of the dirtier secrets of the comics business, at the time, at least where DC was concerned, is their editors would solicit multiple pitches for a series from every artist and writer they could think of. Would they pay for all of the work these many creatives would put into their pitches? No, they wouldn't. It was free work and they had no ethical problem with it. Freelancers, even the best of them, were dogs, and ever shall be. That's just the exploitative way the industry worked back then and continues to do so, in many ways. In any case, the three pages included in this pitch included ideas for how Bill would draw The Corinthian; Nuala, the elf; Eve; Matthew the Raven; Cain; Abel; and Goldy the Gargoyle. Of the designs Bill said he particularly liked the way the Cain and Able page came out.
These three pages will only be sold as a set.
